I try to cultivate a student's curiosity, and then provide the necessary tools for learning. If students are curious and driven to learn, their potential is limitless. My goal is to help students learn through discovery. I am patient, considerate, and respectful of each student.

Experience Summary

While studying for my BA in English (Emphasis in Literature), I worked for two years as a writing tutor at the Hagan Writing Center. Tutoring was offered as a free service for interested students. (For some students, it was required). I tutored students at all levels from pre-College Writing to senior level literature courses. I completed work for my degree at three different colleges and universities in the United States and England, and I feel that the different teaching and learning methods I have seen have prepared me to be a more effective English tutor.

I love teaching and working with all levels of students. I believe all children can learn, but each in different ways. I am available to help your child find academic success. I am patient, easy going, and considerate. My goal is to provide the best education possible. I am a firm believer in teaching through discovery and in providing a constructivist approach to learning. I believe all children can meet their potential if they are given the appropriate surroundings and learning experiences. A few good educators can make a world of difference to a child's education. As a college graduate, I was very much driven to achieve a level of excellence in education. I have earned a bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering, and completed my thesis leading to a Master's degree in Economic Policy. These have enabled me to gain an understanding in many areas of math and science. In addition, I have learned extensive grammatical skills due to writing research papers and laboratory reports, along with essays in many various areas of study. During the last 13 years I have tutored students (all levels) in Mathematics, Sciences, and Economics and English. For two years I taught as the MCAS Math Instructor, Roxbury Community College, where I taught math concepts and methods to high-school students in preparation for statewide assessment tests. This involved developing and implemented unit plans and assessments, the assessment of individual learning styles and adapted teaching methods to fit. I am proud to say I created a classroom environment that engaged student interest, leadership and stimulated learning.

I am grateful that school was easy for me, but I also know that for many children the task of discovering, understanding, making sense of, and retaining information can be tough and may seem almost overwhelming. All children can learn and there is no better way to instill that desire in them, than to work one-on-one or in small groups. All subjects can be made interesting, and I feel I have a knack for making the "boring" material come alive with relevance and excitement.

Upon graduating from Johns Hopkins with a degree in writing, I substitute taught full-time at the high school and the middle school levels in the small upstate New York town where I grew up. Since my days as a substitute teacher, I have worked as a freelance writer, Senior Editor at a major publishing company, Senior Copywriter at an ad agency, and attended grad school. Over the past 15 years, I have tutored a number of high school students primarily in English, social studies, paper-writing, and general test-taking strategies.

I am extremely sensitive to the individual needs of each child. At first, I work with my students at their success level so they start to build self-confidence and a sense of mastery. Then, I will begin to challenge my students, without frustrating them but stimulating them, so they want to learn more and more. This helps them to become more independent learners. I utilize all modalities to stimulate my students five senses. I also encourage them to use abstract thinking to find their own solutions and think ' out of the box '.

I recently retired from the NYC Dept. of Education. I was a Special Education Teacher for the past 25 years. I graduated with Departmental Honors in Psychology, as well as receiving a license for teaching both Elementary and Special Education. My dual educational background has enabled me to work on emotional/learning issues with children(eg-self esteem, behavior modification, attention deficit disorders, etc.), as well as all academic subjects. I am well versed in writing I.E.P.'s, case studies, behavioral programs, lesson plans, long and short term learning objectives and progress reports. I worked in a psychoeducational setting and am well practiced in communicating with students, parents, administrators, therapists and other educators. I feel that open communication is extremely important among all involved with each child, in order to give the child a feeling of security and consistency. Each child is an individual with different learning needs and styles. It is up to the educator and team, to help them reach their full learning potential.

With my tutoring experience I have learned that each child learns and comprehends material on an individual level. With that said, it is essential that a teacher understand his/her students' strengths and weaknesses. My goal is to help my students discover how they learn so that they will benefit from their education. In a tutoring atmosphere it is important for students to see how they can apply learning techniques to their future classrooms. Additionally, I believe that students gain the most from education when they are actively involved rather than becoming overwhelmed with information. I have earned two bachelor degrees, BA in Elementary Education and BA in English, and have had experience tutoring in both of these fields. As an education student I volunteered in elementary school classrooms and tutored students in a variety of subjects. I have spent the past three years in writing centers working with undergraduate and graduate students, helping them in paper organization, grammar, and concise writing. I believe that every child is capable of learning and that every child has their own style of learning. As a teacher, I believe in differentiated instruction that allows all students an equal opportunity to learn. I believe in teaching through student exploration. Once a child is able to discover a concept on their own, they are able to better understand and remember it. My approach to teaching is to expose students to practical problems. Once these problems are understood, I introduce a mathematical concept that should allow them to discover a solution to the problem. Throughout this approach, I’m always encouraging and patient. I always stress the importance of making an attempt at solving a problem, as in my favorite quote, “Without struggle, there is no progress.”

During completion of my undergraduate degree in math, I always strived to achieve excellence in education and to pass on my love for learning. Throughout my college career, I’ve tutored at the undergraduate, the middle and the high school levels. Such exposure allowed me to determine the concepts students have the most difficulty in understanding, and I’m able to prepare accordingly. Upon completion of my degree, I accepted an analyst position with an HR Consulting firm. During these four years, I gained vital experience that allows me to transfer mathematical concepts into real world examples. Such experience has proven to be critical in helping students visualize practical examples of what they learn. I have since left the Consulting firm and entered into teaching. I’m finally doing what I enjoy the most, teaching and passing on a love for learning.

I have had experience with students from middle school to graduate level in college. I was a very successful teacher and administrator and also an adjunct professor at the University of Cincinnati. I am very patient and have been most successful with guiding students to reach maximum potential. I am extremely dependable and very much student centered. I will retire from the Cincinnati Public schools where I served for 30 years as a teacher, and as a high school principal, on June 30, 2008. I received a doctorate in Urban Education Leadership in 2004 and am credentialed to teach English and Communications/Speech. I hold a Masters in Reading. I have won numerous awards for my teaching. My area of expertise is in writing and research. I have tutored students in all levels of English from basic to Advanced Placement. As a principal, I tutored students after school so that they could successfully pass the Ohio State Graduation Test and also helped tutor students for SAT and ACT.
