Teaching Style

Our children today need to be encouraged and given the opportunity to develop. Some students aren't able to get the attention they need in a classroom setting with all of the other students. All they may need is one on one time to help explain the concept in a way they understand. I'm a very "hands on" tutor and like developing fun, creative ways for the students to learn. I am attentive, encouraging, patient, and considerate and will be available to help the children succeed. My goal is to make a positive difference in each students life.

Experience Summary

As a graduate of Pfeiffer University's Pre Medical program, I feel that I am qualified to tutor students in the fields of math and science. I graduated Magna Cum Laude and finished in the top ten in my class. With a double major in Pre-Med and Biology, and a minor in Chemistry, I have gained understanding of these areas and can help other students learn and understand the concepts presented in these particular subjects. In high school, I tutored Geometry and Algebra. In college, I tutored Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Calculus. Currently, I’m working with my church on Tuesday afternoons where my mother developed a community outreach program with Central Elementary School where we tutor five K-2 graders in math and reading. My goal is to make a difference in the lives of our children one student at a time.

I love seeing students succeed. I am an excellent teacher because I really care, therefore I put in extra effort to planning and making lessons effective. When possible, I use materials that match student interests. I foster an emotionally safe learning environment so that students feel comfortable. I keep my interactions with students very positive. I enjoy helping students who struggle with Mathematics. As a tutor, it is all about being patient and finding the right approach to teach the students. I believe that every student has the capacity to excel in any subject but they must believe in their abilities. Therefore, tutoring is not only teaching the subject but it is also about assuring the student that he will succeed.

Experience Summary

Mathematics was always my favorite subject since elementary school. When I entered college, it made sense to major in mathematics. Thus, I have earned a Bachelor degree in Mathematics. During my college years, I tutored college algebra, pre-algebra, geometry, and pre-calculus to my peers and younger students struggling in math. Since then I have also helped several high school students in their algebra I and II classes, trigonometry, and AP Calculus. Seeing a student improve their grades and knowing that they feel better about themselves and their accomplishments is extremely satisfying.

My students know I love math. I am enthusiastic, patient, and caring. I believe everyone can learn math given the right circumstances. I take interest in my students, I email them, I encourage them to do their homework. Through this personal interest, my students work to please the teacher. I also use different teaching styles: discovery learning, Look-Do-Learn, one-to-one instruction, critical thinking. Once a student, always a student for me. I go the extra mile.

From an early age I loved math and so when I graduated with a BA in Math and Latin, I went straight into teaching math at the high school level. During graduate school years, I taught math at the University of Toronto. While working with computer programming, I taught math in the evening division of Westbury College in Montreal. I have taught math in different countries: Jamaica, Canada, U.S. Virgin Islands, Nigeria-West African Educational Council, The Bahamas, and Florida.

My teaching style has been, for the most part, dictated by student response. I am comfortable teaching in a traditional lecture format, in a format that uses a cooperative learning approach exclusively, or in a hybrid format. The goal is for effective learning to take place, and I believe my strongest quality is to be able to adapt in such a way that best helps students reach their academic goals.

Experience Summary

For eight years, I taught freshman and sophomore-level mathematics courses at Arizona State University. These courses included College Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Finite Mathematics, and Elementary Mathematics Theory. Additionally, I have tutored students in these courses both in the Mathematics Department Tutor Center, and on my own personal time.

I am a huge proponent of the dialectic and Socratic methods of teaching, while recognizing the need for the didactic to learn the basic methods of academics. My own experience, as well as my background in Psychology, helps me recognize that learning must be relevant, interesting, and conducted in a highly accepting and supportive environment. I am keenly aware of the sense of inadequacy of students who come to tutoring services (I have been one myself in the past) and make special care to make all my students feel that improvement is possible for anyone. The knowledge and strategies that high performers utilize are not exclusive; anyone can learn with patience and the right tutor!

Experience Summary

I am a current teacher for the Princeton Review for the SAT (soon also for the GRE and GMAT), as well as a former tutor for Huntington Learning Center (SAT). A score of 1400 on the SAT allows me the credibility to teach, while a self-awareness allows me to understand the mechanisms and strategies that have allowed me this success. As a recipient of two bachelor degrees, in Biochemistry and Psychology, I am uniquely positioned to help students on a variety of subjects. I have taken teaching as my profession. As a parent I love to help the young ones achieve their goals. I feel delighted when I see my students excel in life. Science, and especially Mathematics, is not as difficult as some people think; it is just a matter of getting the fundamentals. Here presentation of these fundamentals is very important.

Experience Summary

After high school, I went to a teacher training college and graduated after three years. I was a Mathematics and Science teacher for 7 years before I went to Canada for my B.Sc. in Physics. I then went to Howard University where I did my Master of Engineering in Civil (Environmental) Engineering and later my Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering at Ahmadu Bello University. I have tutored a lot of Mathematics and all science related courses. I have published many papers in professional journals. I also belong to many professional science based organizations. I have over twenty five years of University teaching experience. At present I am a part time Math tutor at Saint Augustine's College.

Teaching Style

I believe each child in unique, therefore each child has their unique learning style. Therefore, I tend to provide a variety of learning methods. If one method isn't understood, I move on to another one. I think learning should be fun, so I will occasionally play learning games where students feel relaxed while learning. I always provide rewards and incentives to encourage participation and increase self-esteem. One of the most important things I believe children need to succeed is a positive sense of self. When a child feels frustrated or hopeless they are less likely to want to improve. I begin praising at the students current level of acheivement and then continue throughout the entire tutoring process!

I am currently a tutor for a public school system. I tutor students who are at or below their current grade level. I hold a license in Early Childhood Education- K to 3rd grades. My reading tutoring involves phonemic awareness, sightwords, word attack strategies, comprehension and fluency. When I tutor math I use a variety of math concepts, manipulative, flashcards, worksheets. I am willing to collaborate with teachers to enhance classroom learning and homework skills. I have many years of experience educating children in private Preschool and Kindergarten settings.
