Teaching Style

I love one-on-one tutoring because of the complete attention I can pay to the tutee’s specific needs and his or her learning style. My personality is encouraging, positive and patient, and that has served me well in building relationships with repeat tutees at the Writing Center over the past two years. To me, the primary role of a tutor is to explore ideas about the subject in a way that there is not time for in the classroom and also to ask tutees the questions they would not think to ask themselves about their ideas. I can help tutees explore the potential of their ideas and how to own the skills they already possess. My role is also to help the tutee expand his or her knowledge base and tools for future writing through examples, research and discussion.

Experience Summary

As a tutor at the University of Arizona Writing Center, I worked with undergraduate, graduate and international students on all aspects of the writing process. This encompassed higher and lower order concerns including brainstorming, outlining, drafting, formatting, thesis and topic sentence work, grammar and ESL concerns, research methods, and content. My tutees came from all majors including English, History, Business, and the sciences. I worked on everything from rhetorical analyses to technical writing for business to personal statements and research papers. I also spent two semesters in an online tutoring program for high school students to submit drafts of their college admissions essays for commentary. They could then make revisions and resubmit additional drafts for further critiquing. Additionally, as a Magna Cum Laude History graduate with a Political Science minor, I focused on American History and government and developed a passion for those topics I love to impart on others.

Teaching Style

While attending Northeastern Illinois University, I worked as a Peer Leader for one year for their Peer Led Team Learning (PLTL) program. This consisted of me tutoring a group of students in a one credit hour Organic Chemistry seminar class during the Spring and Fall 2004 semesters. Instead of a traditional tutoring setting, I guided the activities of groups of 10-15 students in weekly seminar formatted meetings. I encouraged the students by initiating questions and discussions that led to conceptual understanding of current class material, often times encouraging the students to explain what they knew to others in the class. I also attended weekly meetings with professor of the corresponding organic chemistry class to review seminar materials and to communicate problems or issues. I also kept a weekly journal documenting the seminar issues and progress and communicated any problems and concerns to the class professor. This was a paid position. Additionally, in May of 2004, I was chosen by the Chemistry Department Head to assist in PLTL workshop training at a teaching symposium at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and later that month was also chosen to attend Chautauqua Short Courses at California State University to assist in PLTL workshop training. These courses were designed to train college professors in the PLTL method of tutoring, enabling them to start a program at their own school.

I have earned two bachelor's degrees, a BS in Chemistry (4.0 GPA) and a BA in Communications, and I have 12 years experience as a paralegal and legal secretary. I have excellent verbal and written communications skills, organizational skills and an outstanding work ethic, which are a great asset in tutoring. I have tutored in organic chemistry and also helped many students in my classes while working towards my chemistry degree. I enjoy helping people understand chemistry and also believe that in teaching, it only solidifies your own knowledge of the subject matter.

Teaching Style

The desire to learn is one of the most important things anyone can learn. Whether it be a child seeing science for their first time, or an college adult ready to tackle the real world. I believe everyone is capable of discovering their true abilities sometimes they just need a bit of a nudge to help them find it. I like to use tutoring to help them determine how they learn. While I may employ a method of how to solve a problem, everyone learns differently. Some people are more audio learners while others require visual aides. My hope is to help them discover how they learn so they can maximize their own potential.

Experience Summary

I am simulation programmer with a passion for mathematics and physics. My desire educate myself further has driven me to explore the cutting edge of simulation technology through the physics of game design. My immense expertise in higher level math has given me a deeper appreciation for continued education. As a tutor I have helped others to share this appreciation since I was 16. In the past I have tutored a variety of subjects which include Calculus, Discrete Mathematics, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Mechanical Physics, Electromagnetics. Additionally I have assisted students with programming courses related to C++, C# and Java, Algorithms and Data Structures, and Artificial Intelligence.

As an elementary and middle school Language Arts teacher I believe instruction should be tailored to the needs of the individual learner and to the needs of the community. I have had the opportunity to teach in a variety of settings and ability levels. Students confidently excel when they are in a learning environment that is tailored to their abilities and needs. I strive to build a relationship of respect with each student. I am focused, student-centered, and knowledgeable of subject matter. I can create and foster an environment that motivates students and helps them to learn.

Experience Summary

I have earned a bachelor of science degree in Elementary Education, a Reading and Literacy minor, and an endorsement in Middle School Education. As a teacher my students succeeded in reading literacy/comprehension, and improved their overall writing skills by several grade levels. After a successful teaching experience in Language Arts, theater, and journalism at the middle school level, I sought a master of arts degree in Educational Administration. Working in school leadership enabled me to focus on creating a real-world language arts curriculum, and improving student motivation and achievement.

My teaching style is highly interactive. I developed and taught an undergraduate seminar at UCLA that was based on role-playing and critical thinking of historical events through intense discussion among students. As a tutor, I ask my students a lot of questions in order to tease out their knowledge and opinion on the subject. I believe that I do not have any right answers but I do have access to resources that will enable students to find the answers that are right for them. My teaching style leads to measurable results by focusing on the process of learning.

Experience Summary

Due to my strong researching and writing skills, I was able to graduate from UCLA with a double major in three years. I have taught college-level classes at UCLA as well as tutored both high school and college students for the past 3 years in English composition and the writing process. My interest in Political Science and Global Studies allows me to contextualize any subject topic to the current happenings, which provides greater relevancy, and thus motivation, to my students.

I am passionate about teaching, and love to work with school age and college level students to help them achieve their academic goals. I am available to help students learn and grow academically. My teaching style is facilitative, patient, easygoing and helpful. I strive to create a productive, safe, and caring environment for my students, where their learning experience is nurtured and productive. I have had the awesome privilege of being educated by many phenomenal teachers, and I believe in providing the same quality of teaching to all my students. As a secondary school and college level teacher, I am passionate about helping my students succeed academically. Having earned two bachelors degrees (A Bachelor of Education in Secondary Education and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science/Mathematics), and a Master of Business Administration degree (GPA of 3.81/4.00), I have the academic and professional competencies which enable me to produce positive outcomes in a teaching environment. During the last 2 years, I have tutored students in Statistics, Mathematics, Biostatistics, and English. Also, I have taught for more than 8 years at the college level, teaching such subjects as Math, Information Technology, and Management Information Systems.

Teaching Style

My main goal is to encourage independent thinking and analytical reasoning to augment their problem solving skills, thus encouraging them to not just memorize. I prompt them to question at every stage: “why?..how?” and satisfy their curiosity, instead of assuming the instructor is always right. My favorite approach is: “If you don’t have any questions, I have some for you”. This prompts classroom discussions which are very useful and has led to several intellectually stimulating questions/arguments that are not always easy to answer. The idea is to provide hints and “baby steps”, building on what they know, and lead them to the answer by making them think logically. The confidence they gain from this exercise is revealed when they tackle the “question and answers” after their group presentations!

I have earned two degrees in chemistry; a BS degree in 2004 and a MS degree in 2005. Since then I have been instructing chemistry courses to undergraduates at Tanta University.These courses include Physical Chemistry, Gravimetric Analysis, Complex metric Analysis, Volumetric Analysis, Qualitative Inorganic Analysis, Organic Chemistry and Qualitative Biochemical Analysis.

Teaching Style

I vary my teaching style depending on the student's particular disposition. I normally allow them to dictate the pace at which I tutor without digressing from our objective. Nonetheless, my goal is to be positive impact on the student. I love to help students get to a level they did not expect they could achieve, and in the same token, I am appreciative when I am humbled by challenging problems for which I have no solution. However, when faced with such a situation, I guide the student in an appropriate direction, and let them know that I will use my own resources to discover a solution and then get back to them. Without question, my style is synonymous to what computer users refer to good programs as, "user-friendly." I am patient with my tutees and steady in my demeanor so that I can gain and hold their confidence.

I have been tutoring since my sophomore year at Rutgers University. I hold the College Reading and Learning Association Level II (CRLA) certification. I tutored Mathematics (Pre-Calculus, Calculus), Chemistry, and Physics to undergraduate students at the university. I have since tutored students in these disciplines at various levels, such as middle school and high school. I have also tutored adults in the area of Information Technology, subjects such as Introduction to Programming, Web Design, and Database Design, while studying for my IT Certification. I have since attained an MS degree in Computer Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and have been working in the IT industry for the past 4 years. I continue to enjoy tutoring and teaching others; be it students, co-workers, or family members. I feel a tremendous sense of satisfaction when I see others succeed and know that I have played a part in their growth.
