Teaching Style

From my tutoring experience, I have noticed that students have trouble understanding the meaning of numbers and symbols on paper simply because no one has taught them how to visualize and interpret them in a real world situation. They also don't realize that they have plethora of resources and tools available to them to help them, yet they rarely utilize them. I try to give hints and clues to my students and let them obtain the right answers on their own instead of simply solving the problem for them. I believe this gives them a much better understand of the material.

Experience Summary

Having recently graduated with a Bachelor's degree, I am continuing my education to obtain my Master's degree in mathematics. Number Theory will be my focus, as I intend to get involved in the encryption field. During my senior year as undergraduate, I have worked on campus as a teacher's assistant and at home as an online tutor for UNCG's iSchool program. I have privately tutored undergraduates needing help in pre-calculus and calculus. I enjoyed helping the students and showing them some of my own tricks and ways when it comes to solving the problems.

First and foremost, I believe it is important to establish a trusting relationship with those you teach. Throughout my experiences in the field of education, I have found the most fruitful of those relationships to be those in which I was able to work with a student or group of students regularly over an extended period of time to develop a routine and a strong relationship in which great amounts of learning and understanding could be accomplished. Although many people experience obstacles in learning Mathematics, I believe that by presenting multiple ways to approach a problem, every student can find a method that works for them. Every student should be allowed the resources and opportunity to realize that they CAN achieve their goals. I am here to help students who have had difficulty with Math in the past to succeed, and feel confident in both their abilities in Math, and in life.

As a student, I was always committed to learning and to achieving my goals. As a teacher and tutor, I strive to help others share the same love for learning and for understanding as I do. Now, I help others set goals, and work toward achieving them. I have worked with all ages, all ability levels, and various sized groups and have enjoyed each and every experience. In the past, I have primarily tutored in the subject of Mathematics, but am also trained by the Literacy Council to tutor reading and writing, and have enjoyed volunteering with that organization as well. I believe that I can help anyone enjoy and understand math, and help them feel better about themselves for it.

I love seeing students succeed. I am an excellent teacher because I really care, therefore I put in extra effort to planning and making lessons effective. When possible, I use materials that match student interests. I foster an emotionally safe learning environment so that students feel comfortable. I keep my interactions with students very positive. I believe that emphasizing what a student does right works better than focusing on mistakes.

Being a tutor allows one to reach out and find the most personal and effective way to connect and instruct a student. My exposure to the many learning styles of students has taught me the importance of first understanding the student's learning style. I also believe it is important for teachers to find motivating factors for students. Lastly, I believe it is the teacher's responsibility to make learning fun for each student. When in combination, these factors create a successful learning environment for students.

I have been working with children of all ages, from diverse backgrounds, and in a variety of environments for many years. I have been a camp counselor, swim instructor, piano teacher, and religious education teacher. I currently have been substitute teaching in grades K-12. My bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in Communication studies in addition to my current graduate work has allowed me a strong command of the English language. I am most confident teaching reading, writing, and other areas of language arts. My vast array of experiences has also allowed me comfort in teaching the basics of mathematics, science, and the arts.

I have taken teaching as my profession. As a parent I love to help the young ones achieve their goals. I feel delighted when I see my students excel in life. Science, and especially Mathematics, is not as difficult as some people think; it is just a matter of getting the fundamentals. Here presentation of these fundamentals is very important.

Experience Summary

After high school, I went to a teacher training college and graduated after three years. I was a Mathematics and Science teacher for 7 years before I went to Canada for my B.Sc. in Physics. I then went to Howard University where I did my Master of Engineering in Civil (Environmental) Engineering and later my Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering at Ahmadu Bello University. I have tutored a lot of Mathematics and all science related courses. I have published many papers in professional journals. I also belong to many professional science based organizations. I have over twenty five years of University teaching experience. At present I am a part time Math tutor at Saint Augustine's College.

I believe that with patience and the right tools, children and adults can learn anything. Learning is fun and adventurous once students identify their learning styles. My goal is to guide students through the learning process so that they can problem-solve on their own, away from tutors/teachers.

I have been fortunate to earn degrees and work in the fields of education and science. I want to help others achieve their dreams in pursuing careers especially in math and science. I graduated with a 4.0 GPA in undergrad/valedictorian, Class of 1994. As the eldest of 5 children, I have always tutored relatives. The love to help others love learning continued into my undergraduate studies and beyond. Being an educator various teaching styles were implemented, but my preference is Constructivism Philosophy of teaching. This philosophy introduces various techniques and strategies fostering a student-centered learning atmosphere. This method offered a structured setting for high and low functioning students. The students initiated and created positive effective learning opportunities in groups. This has established and maintained positive relationships with students, parents, colleagues and community advocators. This has fostered a safe and learning environment.

Experience Summary

As a veteran teacher, I have managed classroom from elementary to secondary classes. I assumed diverse responsibilities from special and standard diploma students (reading, phonics, math, learning strategies, language arts, and career education). Conferred with parents weekly/ monthly, implemented various assessment tools to meet the varying academic functioning levels. Collaborated and assist in designing modified behavior plans for under achievers and potential at risk students. I am an enthusiastic educator with a passionate commitment to develop student’s achievement. I advocate challenging, enriching and innovating opportunities for exceptional education students. Experience Summary

In 2006 I graduated from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) with a Master of Science degree. During my Master's program I worked as a teaching assistant in General and Organic Chemistry Laboratories. I was responsible for a brief introduction of the material prior to every lab period. This greatly helped me to learn how to organize material I was to present and explain difficult concepts in a simple manner. At USC as a Ph.D. student, I had a chance to work for the Student Athletes Academic Service where I was a chemistry and math tutor. In addition, during the spring of 2007 I was working as an assistant for the Organic Chemistry Course at LA Trade Tech College, where I was responsible for weekly sessions.
