I began tutoring algebra when I was in high school for my boss' kids in the back of the restaurant where I worked. I then went on to get my BA in mathematics at La Salle University, with a minor in Education. While in college, I continued tutoring my fellow students in math and chemistry for a peer tutoring program set up by the school. In addition I observed/student taught at various schools in the Philadelphia area. I have knowledge of a wide range of mathematics, my specialty being algebra and calculus. Mathematics was always my favorite subject since elementary school. When I entered college, it made sense to major in mathematics. Thus, I have earned a Bachelor degree in Mathematics. During my college years, I tutored college algebra, pre-algebra, geometry, and pre-calculus to my peers and younger students struggling in math. Since then I have also helped several high school students in their algebra I and II classes, trigonometry, and AP Calculus. I love tutoring. It allows me to see the result of my work. When a student comes to me, I try to see what is wanted of me, then I try to find student’s weak points in terms of learning and subject matter and to understand what kind of learner he or she is. Overall, I tend to analyze a person in a way that will allow me to help him, to heal his injury by filling his knowledge gap. I believe that the most efficient learning happens when a student himself has a strong desire to gain knowledge. I believe that the key to a successful tutoring work lies in finding a right approach to a student's learning issues and provoking in this student that important desire to learn.

My tutoring experience started in High School, where I tutored privately mathematics and physics. By the time I got into college, tutoring became my passion. I started tutoring general chemistry during my sophomore year after I was able to gain a profound understanding of the subject. Later on I also started tutoring Biology, Physics and Organic Chemistry. I have also worked in the SEEK Department of Hunter College, where I had to tutor these sciences for students with special educational needs, organize science workshops and teach freshman orientation seminars. There is nothing I have so far experienced as rewarding as seeing the progress and the result of one’s own work – especially when this work influences and helps lives of other human beings.

I use the Socratic method of teaching with a strong emphasis on homework. Students are required to summarize all chapters in the text book and write how the math topics relate to their own personal life. By using this method math becomes alive to them and consequently results in them getting a much firmer grasp on how math applies to their everyday life.

I am a firm believer in actively teaching with tools and visual aids to facilitate a student’s understanding. I perceive myself as a facilitator rather than an educator. I see my role as someone that can help students develop ways and methods of associating and assimilating concepts and ideas, and develop ways to effectively use them. My interest in teaching began after two years of providing on-site private tutoring in the schools. The feedback and outpouring of positive reinforcement that I received from the students led me to the classroom. I have taught science for three years in two different Dade County Schools. My years teaching have given me a better focus of the sciences and gifted me with new managerial skills. My own experiences with academics and from tutoring have shown me that practice does make perfect. When tutoring, I have often drafted my own quizzes that focused on key subject matter to help solidify the material. I have discovered that this method helps work through the most difficult concepts while highlighting areas that need extra attention. Nevertheless, it is important to have patience and tailor a lesson to the individual student's learning style in order to help make them a successful student.

During my undergraduate years at Brandeis University, I worked as a teaching assistant and volunteer tutor. My responsibilities as a teaching assistant entailed leading review sessions, holding office hours and grading exams/papers. Additionally, I volunteered for a year with the 'Waltham Group' (a student run non-profit organization) and tutored local elementary school students. Both my undergraduate and graduate education is heavily concentrated in the biological sciences. My education has been supplemented with 5 years of laboratory experience. Furthermore, I have developed strong time-management skills by completing 3 Bachelors degrees in a total of 4 years from a Tier 1 University as a well as a Master of Science degree in 1 year from a Tier 1 medical school.
